The last peat excavation

In Southeast Drenthe there is still a small part left of what used to be called the Bourtanger Marsh: a peat area that once was as large as approximately 430,000 football fields! Until 1950, peat workers removed the peat layer by layer to make turves. At first by hand, later on with large machines.

In the Veenpark you can see how peat workers lived and worked around 1920. Visit the last place in the Netherlands where peat is still being cut.

Augmented Reality

Especially for families with children, a digital experience is being developed for this location. Expected to be available as of January 2025.
