The oldest city in Drenthe

Coevorden is the oldest city in Drenthe and home to the province’s only castle, built in 1024. At the time, Coevorden lay along an important trade route to Groningen and Friesland. Over the centuries, the city has witnessed many historic events – such as the Battle of Ane in 1227 and the Iron Biscuit Riot in 1770.
