Peasant burning weeds
Vincent van Gogh
It is a bleak autumn evening at the end of October 1883. The sun is setting. A peasant is stoking a fire on a bare piece of land. Not for the heat, but to burn weeds. At least, that's what Vincent van Gogh assumes. It might as well be something completely different that is going up in flames. The painter doesn't really care. To him it is just a beautiful and fascinating image. In the evenings he often goes outside to study the farmer and his fire.
