Preparatory study the Bleaching Ground in Zweeloo
Max Liebermann
Max Liebermann is also referred to as 'Schmutzenmahler': painter of dirt and poverty. For a long time, he used a wide variety of greyish shades, of which grey-yellow and grey-brown were his favourite colours. But gradually his style changed: it became more modern, with brighter colours and also a looser brushstroke. This preliminary study is a good example of Liebermann's new, very successful style.
