The peat barge
Vincent van Gogh

Room of Beauty

Van Gogh painted De Turfschuit quickly, with a broad brush and a palette knife. First the cream-coloured underlayer, after which he added the figures. Then he painted the land with the peat heaps and the contours of something that looks like a peat hut. After that he did the water and the barge. The air came last. Satisfied, Van Gogh writes: As I paint, I believe I am learning to paint a little better’. It is in Drenthe that he realizes that it is his calling to become an artist.
