The Yde Girl
We do not know what kept her busy, what she enjoyed and what her name was. What we do know is that she lived around the beginning of the Common Era, when the first Romans came to the Netherlands. And that at the end of her life she played an important role in her community. She was killed and left in the marshes as a human sacrifice.
She had lain in the peaty marshland between Vries and Yde for nearly 2000 years, when she was found by Willem Emmens (1871-1949) and Hendrik Barkhof (1877-1961), on Wednesday 12 May 1897. You can visit the spot where she was found. How? Just scan the QR-code and go on a discovery tour of Drenthe.
