Special finds near Peest
50,000 years – that's how long ago the Neanderthals were in our country.
Occasionally they came from their southern habitats to what is now the province of Drenthe. Chances to find anything tangible from that time are extremely slim. That is what makes the finds near the village of Peest so special. Pieces of flint show that Neanderthals made tools here. They used them to work on wood or bone. Very occasionally, wood or bone from the time of the Neanderthals is found. Also in the Netherlands, although unfortunately no worked pieces have ever been found here.
