A remarkable sacrifice
A group of people brought these seven objects together and sacrificed them in a swamp. The site is located on an important route to the North Sea. But there is something remarkable about this offering, in particular the shapes of the flint lumps (1). If used to be shaped into axes, they are virtually unusable. The unfinished axe (2) is made of red flint from Helgoland, an island in the North Sea. That's why it is very rare. And the finished axes (3) are so big that they would break if they were actually used. So, being unusable as axes, they were perfectly suitable as sacrifices.
