Quite a spectacle!
The Princess of Zweeloo’s remains were found in a burial field with neatly aligned graves. She ended up there in the 5th century CE, among about a hundred others. Horse skeletons have also been found there.
A no more than twelve years old boy lay buried near her. Judging from the many precious items that had been buried with them, they must both have been of high status. Around the princess lay many jewels and the young boy’s grave contained richly decorated conical glass goblets, made in the area between the Maas and the Rhine rivers.
Power, wealth and status: showing them was a must for a dignitary! Even after their death and during the funeral, which used to be quite a spectacle.
