A hidden jewel

At a wedding everyone wants to look their best. It is an opportunity for the ladies to show off their ear irons: originally a tool that over the ages has evolved into an ornamental head accessory. In the 16th century it was a simple iron clamp to fasten a woman’s cap to her head – hence the name: ear iron. Over time, it would cover an increasing part of the proud owner's head. The most beautiful ones are made of silver or gold. But there are also ear irons made of copper or brass.

Strangely enough, the ear iron is largely hidden ... It is worn with a pleated lace cap over it! So how do you make sure you stand out? That is what the gold decorations at the height of the wearer’s temples are for. Real works of art, often made of delicate gold wire. Take a good look. The matching hat pins and the forehead plate are jewels in themselves. The forehead plate is sometimes even decorated with garnets or crystal stones. To be easily recognizable during the wedding, the bride used to wear a colourful flower cap over her ear iron.
