Life in the Middle Stone Age
Life during the Middle Stone Age is moving all the time. People travel from place to place to hunt, fish and gather plants. Much of that life takes place along water, as that is where most food can be found.
Aurochs (1) are hunted at fordable river sections. Barricades are placed in the water to force fish into traps and fishing spots. People live in camps on elevated parts in the landscape, where they prepare their food and process flint (2), antler and bone (3) into tools and weapons. On this prehistoric campsite, they even boil water in a pit by throwing hot stones (4) into it.
People are not just concerned with survival. Their existence is full of mythical stories and rituals, in which the red deer seems to play a leading role. Red deer skulls (5) are used to make magical ritual masks. Ultimately, those masks are sacrificed.
