The ultimate sacrifice: your life

What sacrifice would you be willing to make in times of emergency? Would you give away your money, belongings and food, even if you don't have much yourself? What if the imminent danger demands the greatest sacrifice of all: your life. Or that of your partner, sister or child. Would you be prepared to go that far?   
   
No one knows how they will react to imminent danger until they find themselves in that situation. Roughly two thousand years ago, people in the northern Netherlands actually were in such a threatening situation. More and more often they chose to sacrifice people in the marshes, among other places near what is now the village of Yde. This fate befalls a young woman of 16. Dressed in a richly coloured cloak made by her entire family or perhaps even the entire village, she is taken to the edge of the marsh, where a cruel death awaits her, in the hope that it might lead to the salvation of the village …
