Valuable wagon wheels
Sacrifices have been made in the marshlands for thousands of years. At first glance, many of the objects that were sacrificed look like normal utensils, but actually they stand for something greater. Around 2900 BC, the offering of a set of wagon wheels is perhaps the most valuable sacrifice made. Imagine such fine wagon wheels, carved from solid pieces of oak ending up as offerings in the peatlands.
Could they really do without those fine, oaken wagon wheels? Why not make a pair of smaller ash wood wheels, especially for the gods? Unusable under your wagon, but fine as a symbolic offering. This was quite a common practice. Surely the gods will understand – or will they?
