Cosmopolitans with precious treasures
Showing who you are, what you have and that you know what's going on in the world. In the late Stone Age, that was very important. At least, for the 'heroes' who were buried with all the treasures that lie here. And for those left behind.
The owners of the grave goods were cosmopolitans. They had connections throughout the entire continent. In large parts of Europe, we find the bell-shaped pottery (1, 3). Even the metals found in the graves show how worldly these people are. Take this dagger (4), bracelet (5), and awl (6). Copper carne from far outside the Netherlands. These objects have travelled hundreds of kilometres to get here. But the hair ornaments (2) and the little rolls (8) are truly extraordinary! They are the earliest gold artifacts found in the Netherlands. The hair ornaments have been repaired multiple times. And yet, those extremely rare precious items were eventually placed in the grave.
