Mighty beautiful
‘It is mighty beautiful here,’ Vincent van Gogh writes to his brother. It is 1883 and Van Gogh lives and works in Drenthe. Not in the lovely sandy part of the province, but in the vast, grey peat area. The beauty of the hard life there inspires him.
Before he went to Drenthe, van Gogh had not painted very long, and in the 86 days he spent there, he worked on his skills by painting landscapes and people at work, experimenting with colour and improving his technique. This enabled him later on to create masterpieces such as The Potato Eaters and The Sower.
In Drenthe Van Gogh stayed at Hendrik Scholte's inn, in Nieuw-Amsterdam/Veenoord. His room on the inn's upper floor still exists and can be visited. How? Scan the QR-code and go on a discovery tour of the province of Drenthe.
